Spectral Compatibility - a Prerequisite for Maximizing the Potential of Twisted-Pair Access Networks

The improvements of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology enable telephone companies to optimize the utilization of their twisted-pair access networks in a flexible way, closely relating bandwidth demand and system costs. However, for the definition of VDSL systems as the next generation of DSL spectral compatibility with other DSL systems and with amateur radio systems has to be considered. Following a summary of the DSL evolution we analyze the impact of DSL spectral compatibilty on introduction strategies for ADSL and VDSL. Numerical results are given for VDSL system proposals. Regarding compatibility with amateur radio systems techniques for handling egress and ingress are discussed.
